Norton 360 v2 is designed to cover all the bases--antivirus, firewall, antiphishing, antispyware, backup, performance issues, and online transaction security--and therefore doesn't require the maintenance of separate security and utility products. This may sound good, if you want one company handling all your PC needs. However, advanced users will notice a lack of richly detailed setting options found in the standalone products from competing vendors. The features Symantec includes are for general audiences not necessarily versed in security.

Similar to Microsoft Windows Live OneCare, Symantec Norton 360 v2 has added a network map, allowing you, as home network administrator, to see the security status of other computers on your home network.
Norton 360 v2 extends antisphishing protection to Firefox. However, you will need to reboot the computer to install the Norton toolbar to Firefox. In addition, we found that the technical support section always opens up Internet Explorer even when the default Web browser is Firefox.

Enhanced Backup features tighter integration with Blu-ray, iPods, and other shared devices. Within Windows Explorer, right-click and select the method you wish to back up a file or directory.

Enhancements to PC Tuneup include the capability to remove unneeded registry files, automatic shutdown after a task (say a thorough scan or backup of your machine), new diagnostic reports for easy problem solving, and browser cleanup tools for Firefox.

Additional features are contained within the Norton 360 v2 add-on pack. The pack includes Parental Controls, antispam tools, and confidential information blocking tools. Norton makes the download an option for people who do not want or need these services, and it requires a reboot of your system.

Now you have the opportunity to transform your Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server's interface into a Windows Vista interface. Vista Transformation Pack allows you to change and customize your Start menu, Desktop, and Taskbar.

A lot of skins are available for you to choose from. There also is a docking Sidebar which contains a Memo text feature, clock, organizer, picture slide show. The installation process backs up your original system files, so that they can be completely restored in case you want to go back to the classical Windows GUI.
One of the nice features of this desktop enhancement utility is the battery meter that is displayed on the right side by default. Every gadget that is displayed by default on the sidebar, can be dragged wherever you like on the screen.

Pluses: Windows Vista Transformation Pack is a free product. It adds a customizable new look to your Windows desktop, with little or no intervention from your side.

Drawbacks / flaws: Once installed, it might reduce the speed of your machine and might create system instability. For example, on my computer, sometimes the default user icon that normally shows up in the Start menu, is displayed somewhere in the middle of the screen and remains there until I reboot.

In conclusion: Windows Vista Transformation Pack is an interesting application, with lots of new features just waiting to be put through the test. If you are bored with your Windows XP interface, this software is a definite must-try.

When a window is active (its taskbar button appears pressed down), clicking its taskbar button minimizes the window. That means that the window disappears from the desktop. Minimizing a window doesn't close it or delete its contents—it merely removes it from the desktop temporarily.

In the picture below, Calculator has been minimized, but not closed. You can tell it's still running because it has a button on the taskbar.

Picture showing Calculator minimized on the taskbar
Minimizing Calculator leaves only its taskbar button visible

You can also minimize a window by clicking the Minimize button, in the upper-right corner of the window:

Working with windows

Whenever you open a program, file, or folder, it appears on your screen in a box or frame called a window (that's where the Windows operating system gets its name). Because windows are everywhere in Windows, it's important to understand how to move them, change their size, or just make them go away.

Parts of a window

Although the contents of every window are different, all windows share some things in common. For one thing, windows always appear on the desktop—the main work area of your screen. In addition, most windows have the same basic parts:

Picture of a Notepad window with different parts labeled
Parts of a typical window

Title bar. Displays the name of the document and program (or the folder name if you're working in a folder).

Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons. These buttons hide the window, enlarge it to fill the whole screen, and close it, respectively (more details on these shortly).

Menu bar. Contains items that you can click to make choices in a program. See Using menus, buttons, bars, and boxes.

Scroll bar. Lets you scroll the contents of the window to see information that is currently out of view.

Borders and corners. You can drag these with your mouse pointer to change the size of the window.

Other windows might have additional buttons, boxes, or bars. But they'll usually have the basic parts, too.

using menu botton

Menus, buttons, scroll bars, and check boxes are examples of controls that you operate with your mouse or keyboard. These controls allow you to select commands, change settings, or work with windows. This section describes how to recognize and use controls that you'll encounter frequently while using Windows.

Using menus

Most programs contain dozens or even hundreds of commands (actions) that you use to work the program. Many of these commands are organized under menus. Like a restaurant menu, a program menu shows you a list of choices. To keep the screen uncluttered, menus are hidden until you click their titles in the menu bar, located just underneath the title bar. For example, clicking "Image" in Paint's menu bar displays the Image menu:

Picture of the Image menu in Paint
Clicking a word in the menu bar opens a menu

To choose one of the commands listed in a menu, click it. Sometimes a dialog box appears, in which you can select further options. If a command is unavailable and cannot be clicked, it is shown in gray, like the Crop command in the picture.

Some menu items are not commands at all. Instead, they open other menus. In the following picture, pointing to "Zoom" opens a submenu. Pointing to "Custom" in the submenu would open yet another submenu.

Picture of a menu and submenu
Some menu commands open submenus

If you don't see the command you want, try looking at another menu. Move your mouse pointer along the menu bar and its menus open automatically; you don't need to click the menu bar again. To close a menu without selecting any commands, click the menu bar or any other part of the window.

Recognizing menus isn't always easy, because not all menu controls look alike or even appear on a menu bar. So how can you spot them? When you see an arrow next to a word or picture, you're probably looking at a menu control. Here are some examples:

If you open more than one program or document at a time, you can quickly start piling up windows on your desktop. Because windows often cover each other or take up the whole screen, it's sometimes hard to see what else is underneath or remember what you've already opened.

That's where the taskbar comes in handy. Whenever you open a program, folder, or document, Windows creates a button on the taskbar corresponding to that item. The button shows the icon and name of the item. In the picture below, two programs are open—Calculator and Minesweeper—and each has its own button on the taskbar.

Picture showing Calculator and Minesweeper on the desktop and their corresponding taskbar buttons
Each program has its own button on the taskbar

Notice how the taskbar button for Minesweeper appears pressed in. That indicates that Minesweeper is the active window, meaning that it's in front of any other open windows and is ready for you to interact with.

To switch to another window, click its taskbar button. In our example, clicking the taskbar button for Calculator brings its window to the front:

At one stage the CorelDRAW Graphics suite had the PC graphics world to itself and each year's new release was a major event. Even when its Mac-based rivals FreeHand and Illustrator converted to the PC platform, CorelDRAW had such a head start that there was no real comparison. However, over the years Corel lost its graphics focus and allowed DRAW's rivals to make up lost ground. With Corel's recent forced sale to venture capitalists, DRAW's loyal users want to know whether the suite still has a future. m The emphasis in this latest release is on making DRAW a more intelligent and more helpful drawing environment. As such, top of the new features list is the new Smart Drawing tool. This intelligently guesses the shapes you are trying to create such as circles, triangles and arrows, and automatically straightens sketched lines and smooths curves. From the way that Corel is hyping this, you'd think that the Smart Drawing tool replaces all others and is now the only one you need to produce your designs. In practice though the program can't really second guess what you want to achieve and in most cases correcting its attempts takes far longer than using the existing tools.

change the visual effects of windows

Windows provides several options to set the visual effects of your computer. For example, you can show shadows under menus. Shadows give menus a 3-D look. You can configure Windows to display all the contents of a window while you move the window on your screen. To make large text more readable, you can display the smooth edges of screen fonts.

Windows provides options to turn on all the settings (for best appearance), or none of the settings (for best computer performance). You can also restore the default settings.

To change the visual effects, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance, click Settings.
3. Click the Visual Effects tab, and then use one of the following methods:
• Click Adjust for best performance to have Windows automatically adjust the settings for best performance.
• Click Adjust for best appearance to have Windows automatically adjust the settings for best appearance.
• Click Custom, and then select the check boxes for those items that you want to turn on. Clear the check boxes for the items that you want to turn off.

change the size of the virtual memory paging file manually

You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Change under Virtual memory.
4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
If you decrease the size of either the initial or maximum paging file settings, you must restart your computer to see the effects of those changes. When you increase the paging file size, you typically do not have to restart your computer.

Notes
• To have Windows select the best paging file size, click System managed size. The recommended minimum size is equivalent to 1.5 times the RAM on your computer, and 3 times that figure for the maximum size. For example, if you have 256 MB of RAM, the minimum size is 384 MB, and the maximum size is 1152 MB.
• For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the RAM on your computer. It is good practice to leave the paging file at its recommended size. However, you may increase its size if you frequently use programs that use much memory.
• To delete a paging file, set both the initial size and the maximum size to zero, or click No paging file. We strongly recommend that you do not disable or delete the paging file.

how to set performance options in Windows XP

How to manually manage processor time Windows manages system processing. Windows can allocate tasks between processors and manage multiple processes on a single processor. However, you can set Windows to allocate more processor time to the program that you are currently running. The added processor time causes programs to respond more quickly. Or, if you have background programs such as printing or disk backup that you want to run while you work, you can have Windows share processor resources equally between background and foreground programs.

Note You must be logged on as an administrator to the local computer or have the correct network credentials to make certain changes in System.

How to manually change the performance of foreground and background programs
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type sysdm.cpl in the Open box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Performance.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then use one of the following methods under Processor scheduling:
• Click Programs to assign more processor resources to the foreground program than the background program.
• Click Background services to assign equal amounts of processor resources to all programs.
Notes
• If you click Programs, the foreground program runs more smoothly and responds more quickly. If you want a background task such as a Backup utility to run faster, click Background services.
• The Programs option allocates short, variable time slices (quanta) to running programs, and the Background services option assigns long, fixed quanta.

Free up disk space

By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Use Disk Cleanup to:

Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Remove Windows temporary files.

Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

To use Disk Cleanup

1.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

How to decide what data to back up

How to decide what data to back up

Man using a desktop computer

There are many ways you can unintentionally lose information on a computer. A child playing the keyboard like a piano, a power surge, lightning, floods. And sometimes equipment just fails.

If you regularly make backup copies of your files and keep them in a separate place, you can get some, if not all, of your information back in the event something happens to the originals on your computer.

Deciding what to back up is highly personal. Anything you cannot replace easily should be at the top of your list. Before you get started, make a checklist of files to back up. This will help you determine what to back up, and also give you a reference list in the event you need to retrieve a backed-up file. Here are some file suggestions to get you started:

Bank records and other financial information

Digital photographs

Software you purchased and downloaded from the Internet

Music you purchased and downloaded from the Internet

Personal projects

Your e-mail address book

Your Microsoft Outlook calendar

Your Internet Explorer bookmarks

If you haven't already decided where you want to store your backup copies—external hard disk drive, CDs, DVDs, or some other storage format—and you want to know more about your options

Making backup copies manually

Depending on the version of Windows Vista you have, there are two approaches you can take to back up files: Automatic Backup, which backs up just your files and data; or Complete PC Backup, which backs up everything on your computer, including the operating system and applications.

Backup and Restore Windows Center

Windows Backup and Restore Center

The file backup and restore features in Windows Vista make it easier for you to keep your data safe from user error, hardware failure, and other problems. The Windows Backup and Restore Center gives you one place to manage all backup and restore features.

Depending on the version of Windows Vista you have, there are two approaches you can take to backing up files: Automatic Backup, which backs up just your files and data; or Complete PC Backup, which backs up everything on your PC, including the operating system and applications.

Automatic Backup

Automatic File Backup helps to keep your files safe and is available in almost all editions of Windows Vista (it is not included in Starter and has only basic functionality in Home Basic edition). Windows Complete PC Backup is available in the Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions, and performs a complete, image-based backup of the entire computer.

Windows Backup and Restore Center

Help protect your files and your work by backing them up.

Scheduled and Network Backup

Two particularly useful Automatic Backup features are the ability to do a scheduled backup and the ability to back up your files to a network location. (These features are available in all editions of Windows Vista except for Home Basic.)

To help make protecting your files as convenient as possible, with Automatic Backup, you can back up your files to an external hard drive, secondary hard drive, writable CD or DVD, or to a network location. Best of all, Windows Vista will automatically make backups of your data on the schedule that you set, so you never have to worry about forgetting to back up your work.

Back Up Files window

File Backup Scheduling Wizard lets you schedule when backups occur.

Previously backed-up versions of files use only a bare minimum of disk space. If only a small part of a file changes (such as one slide in a presentation), only that portion gets tracked and saved.

Of course, backup is only as useful as the process you use to recover your work, and Windows Vista makes this a cinch. A recovery wizard helps you select the files or folders you want to restore and prompts you for the backup storage medium you used. Then it restores your files.

By the way, if you've accidentally written over a file, say saving an older version of a report you're writing over the top of a newer version, then the Shadow Copy feature can help you recover a prior version of that file.

Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore

Available in Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions, Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore is a comprehensive, image-based backup tool that will help you out of a tight spot if you need to recover your entire system.

While file restore is useful in cases of file loss and data corruption, Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore is most useful for disaster recovery when your PC malfunctions. This feature helps you create complete PC backups, and then in the event of a serious system issue or data loss, Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore can restore your entire PC environment, including the operating system, installed programs, user settings, and data files.

You can restore your PC back to its original state or onto another PC. Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore can be initiated from within Windows Vista or from the Windows Vista installation CD, if the PC is not able to start up normally from the hard disk.

System Restore

System Restore enables you to restore your computer to an earlier state without losing data. This is ideal if your computer is not operating well because of a configuration change, a problem with an application, or the introduction of viruses or other unwanted software. By restoring to an earlier point—a point before your computer began displaying problems—you may be able to easily resolve the problems. (Applications that have been installed since the restore point will be removed.) You don't have to worry about taking periodic system snapshots—System Restore automatically creates easily identifiable restore points. You can also manually create restore points at any time.

beging A Freelance Writing Business

Starting A Freelance Writing Business

freelance writer book on tableIf you’ve always dreamt of writing for money, you may want to look into freelance writing as a way to make money. And contrary to popular belief, it’s not as difficult as it may seem once you know what direction you need to go.

Freelance writing can include Internet clients, magazines, web sites, and any other customer that needs something written for their business or organization. With your talents, you can help provide them with the words that they need to succeed as well as make money for your household.

What You Need To Be A Freelance Writer

The first thing that you will want to do is look around the Internet for places that are helping freelance writers get a good start. Some of these places include auction-like sites that can create a bidding competition for jobs that businesses have for writers. Sites like Elance.com and Guru.com are great places for a beginning writer to make money.

What you do is create an account that will allow you to bid on various jobs that you might be able to do. You create a proposal of the work that you will provide as well as the price that you are charging. When you win the bid, you are winning the chance to write and make money from that effort.

To increase your chances of winning, you will need to have a portfolio of work that you can share with prospective clients. Try to find something that you have written and might be applicable to the kinds of jobs that you will be looking for. As you win jobs and start writing, you will make money because of the experience that you have.

And to make money with freelance writing, you will want to be sure that you have a computer as well as printer and fax to be able to communicate with your client directly and efficiently.

Growing Your Freelance Writing Business Over Time

freelance writing iconAs you take on new jobs and responsibilities, you will begin to gain enough experience to make money at increased rates for increasingly interesting jobs. In the beginning, you want to accept jobs that you know that you can handle and that you understand. Complete them to the client’s expectations and beyond in order to secure a favorable rating for your work.

If you want to make money with freelance writing, it’s best to become versatile in all of the styles and markets that you can write for. That might mean that you learn how to write for web sites as well as for magazines and ebooks. Try to learn about every possible avenue so that you can be the best writer for anyone’s needs.

As you gain clients and experience, it won’t be as difficult to make money. Keep adding to your portfolio and keep trying to recruit new customers to your services. While it might seem to be a great idea to just work for one person, you might want to branch out into other areas as well.

Another way to make money as a freelance writer is to offer editing and reviewing services as well. You can do these kinds of projects in the middle of writing projects to keep your own proofreading skills fresh.

There is an initial ‘rough’ phase that freelance writers go through when they begin to make money because they’re not sure how much work they can tackle at one time. But as you progress, you’ll learn what you can do, how fast, and how well you can do it.

If you’ve ever wanted to make money as a freelance writer, all you have to do is start looking for people who need your special talent and then start typing.
